About Me
Hello! It is so wonderful to have you here. Writing an "About Me" always feels a little bit like starting a new crochet project. You have the yarn, you have the hook, and you have a vision in your heart—but you have to find just the right spot to make that first loop. My name is the face behind Unwinding Yarn, and I am so grateful that our paths have crossed in this little corner of the internet.
I am Harshitha, living in the beautiful, bustling city of Bangalore. If you know Bangalore, you know it is a city that is always on the move. The traffic, the fast-paced tech world, the constant hum of energy—it’s exciting, but sometimes it can feel like we are all spinning a little too fast. For me, crochet has always been the "undoing" of that stress. It is my way of slowing down, stitch by stitch, and finding a moment of quiet in a very loud world. That is exactly why I named this journey Unwinding Yarn. It’s about more than just making things; it’s about the peace we find when we let the world wait for a while and just focus on the rhythm of our hands.
My journey with the hook and thread didn't start with a big business plan. It started with a simple love for the craft. I remember the first time I realized that a single piece of string could be transformed into something warm, something functional, and something beautiful just by using a small hook and a bit of patience. There is something almost magical about it, isn't there? You start with nothing but a ball of yarn, and by the end of the day, you have a flower, a coaster, a scarf, or a toy that carries the warmth of your own hands. As I spent more time with my yarn, I realized I wanted to share this feeling with others. In our modern lives, we spend so much time looking at screens and pressing buttons. We’ve lost a bit of that connection to making things from scratch. I wanted to create a space where people—whether they are busy professionals, students, or homemakers—could come together, put their phones away, and rediscover the joy of creating.
That’s how my workshops in Bangalore began. When I host a workshop, my goal isn't just to teach you how to hold a hook or how to do a double crochet. Those are the technical bits, and I promise you’ll learn them! But more importantly, I want you to feel the "unwinding." I love seeing the look on a student's face when they finish their first row and realize, "I made this." It’s a small victory, but it’s a beautiful one. My workshops are simple, humble gatherings. We sit, we chat, we perhaps struggle a little with a knot here and there, and we learn together. There is no pressure to be perfect; there is only the joy of the process. Alongside the workshops, I also spend my time creating handmade products. Every piece you see on this website or on my Instagram has been made by me, right here in my home. When you buy a handmade item, you aren't just buying a product; you’re buying hours of care, a few mistakes that were carefully unpicked and fixed, and a whole lot of love. Whether it’s a cozy accessory or a small keepsake, I hope these items bring a little bit of that handmade warmth into your home.
I often get asked why I still crochet in an age where everything can be bought instantly online. My answer is always the same: because the soul needs something slow. Crochet taught me that if you make a mistake, it’s okay to "frog" it (rip it out) and start again. It taught me that beautiful things take time and that there is no shortcut to a well-made stitch. These are lessons I try to carry with me in my daily life as well.
I consider myself a very simple person. I love the greenery of our city, the smell of a fresh ball of cotton yarn, and the sound of the rain against the window while I work on a new pattern. I don't claim to be a master of everything, but I am a passionate student of this craft, and I am always learning something new every day. Thank you for supporting a small, local creator. Whether you are here to join a workshop and start your own crochet journey, or you’re looking to take home one of my handmade creations, please know that you are appreciated. You are helping me keep this beautiful, old-fashioned art alive in a modern world.
So, please, take your time, look around, and I hope you find something here that helps you "unwind" too. If you ever see me around Bangalore with a bag full of yarn and a hook in my hand, please do say hello!
With warmth and gratitude, The Heart behind Unwinding Yarn
